A Gem From Space

I have been watching the Netflix show called Files of the Unexplained this past week, and I am so fascinated!  I am four shows in, and two of them have been about alien encounters, and it got me thinking about a gemstone that has an extraterrestrial origin.  Put your foil hat on, and let’s talk about natural Moissanite!  (The picture below is a custom, lab grown Moissanite engagement ring I created for a client!)

Notice that I put the emphasis on the word ‘natural’ in the last sentence because the Moissanite that we buy today is all lab grown, which means it has all the natural components of a Moissanite (silicon carbide) but is created by a machine as opposed to nature. Natural Moissanite is extremely rare! There is debate about the authenticity of later discovered earthly sources, but that is for another blog!

In 1893, Henri Moissan discovered the mineral, later named after him, Moissanite, while exploring rocks from a meteor crater in Canyon Diablo, Arizona.  Initially, he thought they were diamonds, but 11 years later (and several scientific advances later), he found them to be made of silicon carbide which is not a diamond.  In 1969, the Murchison Meteorite fell from the sky and landed in Australia. Since it was a seen and authenticated meteorite fall, there was a lot to learn about the origins of silicon carbide from space. It was confirmed that the natural Moissanite Henri found is extraterrestrial, meaning that it originates from space but is an object now on earth.

Lab grown Moissanite has been widely used in the jewelry world as an alternative to diamond. It has different properties than diamonds and is equally fascinating!  If you are someone who enjoys a good alien story, maybe lab grown Moissanite jewelry is for you!
