Enamel jewelry dates back to the 13th century, and it became very popular more recently during the 1920’s. Some of the enamel ring designs today are very modern and very alternative! But, what are the pros and considerations of an enamel engagement ring?
Colorful: Enamel engagement ring bring a splash of color to your hand! It gives you the opportunity to highlight your signature color in a ring that says ‘forever.’ There are a wide variety of colors depending on the type of enamel used and various style arrangements as well, so options abound!
Fashion Statement: For some ladies, making a fashion statement is such an integral part of who they are. Enamel engagement rings make a bold statement of a modern woman who is not afraid of color and standing out among the rest. This is definitely a ring that will turn heads!
Ring Sizing: Enamel rings can be sized but not without damaging the enamel due to the heat involved in sizing a ring. Some jewelers can reapply enamel that is similar to the color that you have but may not match. Prices to size and re-enamel will be several hundreds of dollars.
Types of Enamel: There are two types of enamel used in jewelry today, hard enamel and soft enamel. Hard enamel is made of mainly glass poured into a ring design. It has limited choice of color and costs more money. The color cannot be replicated. Also, if it is broken or chipped, it cannot be replaced except with a paint that similarly matches. Soft enamel is made mainly of paint which provides many colors to choose from. It is less expensive and can be replaced. My sources tell me that if you have a high end ring, hard enamel is the better choice.
With that being said, if you love the unique designs of enamel for your engagement ring, then you should have one!
