Can You Tell the Difference Between a Lab Grown Diamond and a Natural Diamond

I get asked this question whenever one of my clients are considering a lab grown diamond for their engagement ring, and I have a few answers depending on what angle you are asking about it. Here they are!

ree

·       No, people will not be able to tell it is a lab grown diamond just by looking at it with their naked eye.

·       Ethical lab grown diamond companies will have the words “lab grown diamond” and/or a grading report number that indicates its origin is lab grown and not natural, laser inscribed on the girdle edge of the gemstone. You cannot see that with your naked eye, but a jeweler using a loupe or microscope can see it.

·       If your diamond does not have a grading report, and you are unsure, you can send it to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to have it graded. They will report whether it is lab grown or natural.

·       Lab grown diamonds are created in two different ways, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) or High Temperature High Pressure (HPHT). Both are distinctly different and leave traces on how they were made. Gemologists are beginning to get trained in various ways to spot the differences with techniques and tools.

The reason it is important to know whether your diamond is lab grown or natural is mainly because the price is vastly different, which makes a big difference on your insurance. It also makes a big difference if you ever want to sell that diamond in the future because the relationship ended or you want to upgrade. A lab grown diamond will probably not be worth selling or trading it because the amount would be so low.

With that being said, if my clients want a lab grown diamond, I am here for it! The market does continue to trend downward on lab grown diamonds which can be good or negative depending on how you look at it!
