How Do I Insure My Jewelry

Insuring your jewelry is important, not only because of the monetary value, but also because of the sentimental value. Loss and damage can happen unexpectedly, so it is a good idea to have it place.

1. Your jewelry will need an appraisal (with pictures) done by a professional to get the current valuation. There are different types of valuation for different types of appraisals, but what you are looking for is an “insurance replacement value.”
2. Research your insurance options. Don’t just go to the company that carries your homeowners or renters insurance because they often don’t have the best coverage or rates. Jewelers Mutual is a company that only insures jewelry, and they insure a large portion of jewelry businesses in the United States, so be sure to check with them.
3. Apples to apples? When comparing price options from different companies, make sure you are comparing the same coverages. The most common coverages are theft, loss, damage, and mysterious disappearances. Some companies will also cover loss of stones, faulty repair, or preventative maintenance. Side note: jewelry will need to have maintenance done annually, like a car, so be sure to consider that!
4. Do you travel outside the United States? Most insurance companies will not cover outside of the U.S., but if that is something you regularly do, find a company that will cover outside the United States. Its’ easy to say that you just won’t take anything during international travel, but what about the diamonds stud earrings you wear all the time and so forgot to take off? Or, the simple, plain gold band you decided to wear instead of your diamonds, what if you leave that on a sink somewhere in Greece?
5. After you choose the company you like and coverage you want, submit your paperwork and information, pay your fees, and wait for confirmation from your insurance company. Voila! You are insured!
