How to Clean Your Jewelry at Home

Dirt, oil, and lotions can dim the sparkle on our precious jewelry immensely, and making it into the jewelers to have it cleaned doesn’t always fit in our busy schedules. So, how do you clean it from home? Here is an easy way that works for most jewelry, EXCLUDING pearl jewelry.

Here is what you’ll need: small bowl, Dawn dish soap, soft toothbrush or toothbrush-sized brush, hand towel, your jewelry

1.     Squirt Dawn dish soap into the bottom of the bowl. Two squirts for a lot of jewelry, one for one or two pieces.

2.     Fill with warm water

3.     Put one jewelry piece in the bowl for up to 5 seconds

4.     Pull the piece out and use the brush to scrub the piece. Pay attention to the underside of the gemstones.

5.     Rinse in running water thoroughly.

6.     Pat dry on the hand towel

7.     Repeat for multiple pieces of jewelry

The reason not to use this method for pearl jewelry is that pearls are set with a strong epoxy, and water will break the epoxy down over time causing the pearl to come loose, and possibly, lose it.  Once you are done cleaning your other pieces, you can use that damp towel from drying the other pieces to wipe down your pearl jewelry pieces.

Still bring your jewelry to a professional to have it cleaned because they will also check to make sure it is not in need of repair from wear-and-tear, also, because they can clean it much better with their tools!
