Proposal Hack

Getting down on one knee with the love of your life looking at you, is one of the most vulnerable times of our lives. In most cases, you know she is going to say yes, she may have even picked out the ring, but it’s a moment of truth, and it is felt all throughout our bodies. Most people would call that nerves, but is it?

Most of the physical symptoms of both anxiety and excitement are the same - heart pounding, sweaty palms, trouble concentrating, and an upset stomach. According to JP Collins, the host of the Anxiety Podcast, in an online article by Health Central (see below for link), “Physiologically, anxiety and excitement are very similar. The difference is in our interpretation…” In today’s blog, I am not talking about a diagnosed anxiety disorder but the nervousness that comes up when we are about to do something big in our lives. We tend to associate anxiety or nerves as negative and excitement as positive, but if they are very similar a physiological level, can we hack them?

Hack #1: When you are planning your engagement, and those physiological symptoms start appearing, tell yourself that you are excited. It’s our tendency to say “I am nervous,” but if we begin telling ourselves that we are excited instead, it will shift our whole perception. When it’s nerves, then something could go wrong and we focus on that, but when it’s excitement, so much can go right and we focus on that! I know this to be true because I have used this hack many times when I am preparing for a dance show or speaking in public. It works!

Hack #2: Practice! When our excitement (see what I did there) kicks in, our thought processes can get a little muddled making that in-the-moment-speech very difficult to pull off. Even the best improvisor will have a hard time down on one knee. When you have practiced and practiced a short speech, you have an anchor to hang on to when your brain gets wonky.

Choosing the right engagement ring can definitely be part of the nerves, but when you work with me, I make it exciting because I will walk you through the whole process.
