One of the questions that comes up when I am working with a client on an engagement ring and wedding bands, is how long it will take to get the ring completed. For engagement rings in particular, it has usually taken some time to decide that you are ready to move forward with popping the question, and once decided, you are anxious to get it done! I totally get it, and so I want to give you some time frames so you know what to expect!
It is typical to expect 6 weeks (sometimes a little less time, and sometimes, a little more time) from start to completion. Why does it take this amount of time? Let me give you some reasons!
· Style: I cannot see the picture you have inside your head of the ring you are imagining, so it takes some time to tease out the details. Even when you give me a picture (which really helps), there are some details that usually aren’t shown in the picture that my experience as a jeweler causes me to investigate with you. My goal is that you have a ring you are proud to give, so spending some time on the details before hand is really important!
· Customization: It is rare to pick a ring out of a jewelry case that aligns with your style and budget! Even if the customization is simply a different metal color or a different center diamond shape, the ring is going to need to be made to your specifications, which is great because you get a ring that is uniquely yours. But, that takes time!
· The Good News: In the case of an engagement, the good news is that you have time to plan the proposal, make the reservations, and practice how you are going to ask! In the case of wedding bands, you have a time cushion to allow for any unexpected delays and not feel stressed about the details!
· One Caveat: I can get a ready-made engagement ring or wedding band in a shorter time frame than 6 weeks, but you won’t be able to change the size or shape of the center diamond, get a better or lesser diamond quality, add more or less accent diamonds, or sometimes, change the metal color. They are ready to-go, which will work for some of my clients.
One of my clients and her fiancée got both of their wedding bands one year in advance! She wanted to spread out the money they were spending on the wedding. And, as you can guess, as the wedding got closer, more expenses they didn’t anticipate came up. In terms of money and stress, giving yourself plenty of room in the timeline helps make the process more enjoyable.
