In short, yes, you should have your jewelry appraised, but I want to explain it by starting at the beginning.

What Is an Appraisal?

An appraisal is a dollar valuation of your jewelry, and there are many different types of appraisals that would give you different dollar amounts, but the two that most people need are Insurance Replacement Value and Estate.  Insurance replacement valuation is when you want to insure your jewelry against loss or theft.  During the life of your piece, you should have it updated every five years so that if a loss or theft happens, you are being paid for current market value. Estate appraisals are when you need a dollar amount for an estate for tax and distribution purposes. 

Why Should I Appraise My Jewelry?

·       Insurance. Your agent will need an updated appraisal with pictures in order to get coverage and assess your price for insurance.

·       Loss or theft. Even if you don’t get it insured, it will make it more efficient for the police having a detailed description with pictures. It also helps to prove ownership and value, in the case of legal proceedings.

·       For your next of kin. There is so much that needs sorting through when a loved one passes away. Most people have no idea which jewelry is costume and which has value.  An appraisal will make it easier for your family.

·       Peace of mind. When a loss or theft occurs, it is both emotionally and financially devastating.  In the case of your jewelry being appraised and insured, you are only suffering the emotional and sentiment loss because your insurance company will help you get it replaced with your coverage.
