In light of buying myself a pearl strand necklace for my birthday, I wanted to go over some unique and interesting things about pearls!

1. Pearls are the only gemstone created by a live animal. Every gemstone is some sort of mineral from the earth, or in the case of amber, sap from a tree, but coming from a mollusk is pretty unique! Mollusks are not harmed or killed in the process, they keep creating pearls until their natural life is over.
2. Pearls warm up to the temperature of your skin. When you first put a strand of pearls on, they are cool (and, can be a bit shocking, depending the time of year), but very quickly, they warm up and feel very comfortable. They don’t cool down until you take them off!
3. Pearls come in various colors and shapes! Most of us tend to think of pearls as being white and round, but depending on the mollusk and temperature of the water, pearls can naturally be white, golden yellow, silver, pink, cream, grey, black with green and/or pink tones, and they can even be blue! They can also be perfectly round, slightly out of round, not round at all, or everything in-between (which makes for fun jewelry creations).
Bonus: Almost every pearl you see in the market place is farmed. Gemologists call a natural pearl one that has been found in a non-farmed mollusk. All the farmed pearls are referred to as cultured pearls. To find a natural pearl out in the wild ocean is pretty rare because of fishing for mollusks for human consumption. The pearls generally don’t have time to develop in the mollusk before it is caught. Also, a pearl is formed because an irritant gets inside the mollusk and it creates multiple layers of coating over it. The farmed pearls have an irritant placed inside of it, whereas, a mollusk in the wild ocean doesn’t necessarily get irritants inside its shell all the time.
