What Happens to My Gold?

Have you ever wondered what happens to the gold you sell at a jewelry store?

In order for a jeweler to recoup the money they paid you for your gold, they will send it to a metal refinery. The refinery will go through a process of extracting the gold content of your piece from the other metals. For instance, 14kt gold is comprised of 58.5% gold and the rest are other metals to make it stronger. 18kt is 75% gold and 10kt is 41.6% gold, which is why you get different price per gram amounts for each type of karat of gold when you sell it! The refinery uses a strong heating process and various other chemical processes to do the actual separating of gold from other metals and impurities. Once they determine how much gold content the jeweler sent them, they will write a check for the amount. Typically, a jeweler will send in a whole group of jewelry and metal scraps from a repair bench, so they would not be able to track your specific pieces, as they go into one melting pot!  Usually, that refinery will then create new and clean gold mixes in the different karats to be purchased by different vendors who sell gold wholesale.

Most gold buyers won’t give you very much for the small diamonds and gemstones your piece may have because getting their money back is not as clear cut and easy as the refinery process.  I advise my clients to have their gemstones pulled and kept until they are ready to do something with them.  I also advise my clients that if they feel any sentimental attachment to a piece, not to sell it! Once it is gone, it cannot come back, and it is better to wait until you feel comfortable selling it or restyle it into a piece you will wear.
