What If I Don't Like My November Birthstone

Do you dislike your November birthstone because it is an ugly yellow color? You are not alone! For years, department stores selling poorly made jewelry have advertised a very low quality of yellow Citrine (which is a completely different mineral from Topaz) as the birthstone for November. I’d like to set the record straight for all November-borns, including my own Mom!

Colors: Topaz is naturally found in a variety of colors. Warm browns, luscious pinks, fiery oranges, honey yellows, cool greens, royal purple, pale blues, and even colorless, which are usually treated to create a crisp blue. Some of these colors can even rival Sapphires when it comes to the richness of color! As with Sapphire, it is the additional trace elements that give Topaz its various colors, for instance, chromium can make Topaz red, pink, and violet-to-purple colors.
Imperial Topaz: Imperial Topaz is one of the most expensive colors of Topaz. It is a beautiful orange/pink in color, and the royal name comes from an early source of Topaz in the Ural Mountains of Russia. It was called Imperial in honor of the royal family who were the only people allowed to possess and wear it. Today, most of the Imperial Topaz, some claim all, come from two mines in Brazil.
Topaz had significance in the ancient world, and well into modern society. It was believed to be colored by the sun god, Ra, in ancient Egypt. The Greeks believed it could make the wearer invisible in an emergency, and for centuries, the people of India believed it brought long lift, beauty and intelligence. Topaz was seen as beautiful, mysterious, royal, and powerful which brought its wearer the same kinds of attributes. It is a shame that department stores have sullied its reputation making November-borns dislike their own birthstone. But, now you know its value and beauty!
