12 Days of Christmas

The 12 Days of Christmas refers to the days between December 25th and January 6th in Christian theology. It is said to mark the days of the Christ’s birth and the coming of the Magi who bore gifts of frankincense and myrrh. The four weeks preceding December 25th are actually called the Advent which ends on December 24th.

Historically, people did not put up a Christmas tree or decorate until December 24th when Christmas truly began. All the days leading up to January 6th were for celebrating with gifts given each day. January 5th was the last night and called Twelfth Night where the biggest festivities would occur. January 6th is called Epiphany because with the arrival of the Magi, Christ as the Son of God was revealed, and thus, an epiphany!

The Yule Log was a tradition that began in Norway by the pagans called Yule. It was a very important celebration of the return of the sun which began on Winters Solstice where they would take a large log of wood and have it burn for 12 days. The Christians saw how important this tradition was, so in a desire to meet the pagans where they were at, they incorporated the 12 Days of Christmas to include a Yule log, as well. Today, we refer to a Yule log as a kind of rolled up pastry made during the Christmas season.

Traditions and celebrations have been an important part of human history since the dawn of time. Over the years, some have become irrelevant while others live on but morph into new celebrations. It wasn’t till the mid 1800’s that Santa Claus became an important part of Christmas tradition! I wonder what Christmas will look like in another 100 years.
