What To Do with Gifted Jewelry After a Breakup

Unfortunately, or fortunately, not all relationships last.  It can be heartbreaking and devastating in so many ways, and sometimes, we are left with jewelry the other person gifted us. But, what do we do with it?

Grieve First

Don’t do anything with the jewelry gifts until the initial sharpness of the breakup has run its course.

If you need to put it away in another spot so you don’t see it, then do that, but take a big pause on making any decisions.

Evaluate

Some of the jewelry piece you may never had really liked, and some of it you may still love.

Take the pieces you don’t really like and consider these options:

·       Sell it for the metal value

·       Use the diamonds and gemstones to create a new piece for yourself – beauty from ashes

·       If you have children together, give it to them or save it for them until they are old enough to wear

For the pieces that you did love wearing, consider these options:

·       Re-style it into something different

·       Shift your mindset. Instead of this piece representing heartbreak and failure, decide it means something else, like empowerment – you had the strength to walk away, you took one of the hardest situations of your life and created a beautiful new life from it. It could now represent how far you’ve come and turn into a joy to wear again. (yes, I’ve done this)

Final Thought

If all of this seems hard right now, you may need more time before you make any decisions, and that is okay.  Take all the time you need and don’t rush yourself.

know it may feel like your whole world is falling, but I know from experience that things will get better.
