A traditional engagement ring with a fancy shaped diamond (non-round) has the center diamond setting so that the shape is parallel with the ring finger. A trend that is happening in bridal and fashion is turning the center diamond so that it is elongated perpendicular to the finger. It is called east to west setting. What are the pros and considerations?
Pros
Flips the Script: This is a great design because you can still us the same classic styles but the center gemstone setting direction gives it an esthetically pleasing twist! You can also design it without using a classic base making it very modern. And different.
Any Shape: This style of ring looks fabulous in any fancy shape! You aren’t tied down to a classic round because, obviously, it does not have the same affect with a round gemstone. Using a fancy shaped gemstone also sets it apart.
Considerations
Custom Made: Most of the time, this style is going to require that your ring is custom made which can cost a bit more and take a bit longer. One of the reasons is that fancy shaped gemstones aren’t always cut in the same proportions. In order to have your gemstone set securely, it needs to be custom made with your gemstone’s specific measurements. Another reason is that there aren’t a lot of east to west engagement rings out there.
Protection: When you design your ring, you want to consider the exposed edges of your gemstone. Yes, diamond is the hardest mineral, but it is not indestructible. Your ring will get knocked and hit against hard objects whenever it is on your finger and some east to west designs leave the edge of the gemstone too exposed to being chipped or broken. You will want to design your ring with an experienced designer who will consider that.
With that being said, if you love the unique designs of an east to west setting for your engagement ring, then you should have one!
