Pearls are the only gemstone that is grown from an animal! Both freshwater and salt water mollusks grow Pearls in almost any body of water including the South Seas, and they grow different colors of Pearls. But, have you ever seen a Pearl engagement ring? In the last few years, Pearls have become a choice for brides to be, but there are some pros and considerations to know beforehand.
Pros
· Meaning: Pearls symbolize loyalty, integrity, and generosity which are all the things we want in a healthy marriage!
· Unique: Alternative bridal options are done in a small percentage of engagement rings with Pearls being an even smaller choice for brides. In fact, you probably don’t know anyone who has a Pearl engagement ring, so if you are looking for different, Pearl is one of your best options! They also come in different colors which makes the possibilities for your unique ring endless! You can even use Pearls as accent gemstones next to your Diamond.
Considerations
· Durability: Pearls scratch very easily. They also are very porous which means chemicals and acids can damage your Pearl. Cleaning products, citrus fruit, toothpaste, and soap are just some of the everyday chemicals and acids we encounter. That doesn’t mean that you should not have a Pearl in your engagement ring, it just means you will need to be more conscious of taking care of it. For instance, take it off when doing household or yard chores, exercising and sports, and sleeping. This isn’t a suggestion either!
· Setting Style: Pearls aren’t generally set in prongs like Diamonds are but are drilled and epoxied onto a post. While the epoxy is very strong, liquids do break down the epoxy. It is a good idea to take it off when you wash your hands or do any activity where your ring will regularly get wet.
Sometimes we are under the impression that colored gemstones and Pearls are just like Diamonds except for their body color, but each gemstone is a separate mineral with varying characteristics which means the durability of each gemstone is different from each other. There is a reason why they say “a Diamond is forever,” and it’s because a Diamond’s resistance to scratching, chipping, & breaking is very high, and no other gemstone can match it.
