As you know, when a diamond or gemstone comes out of the ground, it does not look like what you see in a jewelry store. Gemologists call that rough. A skilled cutter will take the rough diamond or gemstone and cut & facet it into what we generally see in stores. An alternative engagement ring that I am seeing is using a rough diamond as the center, sometimes the accent diamonds as well, instead of a faceted diamond. But, what are the pros and considerations?

Pros
Natural Look: A rough diamond has a very organic look. It is not in a perfect shape, there are sharp edges, and is generally not clear. This alternative engagement ring is for the person who does not like a polished look to their jewelry and sees beauty in all the rough edges!
Curiosity: This ring will catch people’s eye because of how different it looks, and they will ask lots of questions! Be sure to be well informed about your rough diamond and ring design.
Considerations
No Sparkle: Cutting and faceting a diamond is what brings out the sparkle of a diamond, so expect a rough diamond to not have that. It also will be translucent to semi-opaque meaning it will not be clear which also contributes to the lack of sparkle. If the wearer is someone who loves to sparkle, this is probably not the ring for them.
Custom Setting: A rough diamond needs a ring that is custom designed in order to accommodate for its unique shape and ability to be set so that it is secure and safe. As mentioned above, a rough diamond is a natural look and a natural-looking ring design will complement it best!
No Cutting Later: There are rough diamonds that cannot be cut & faceted because they have too many inclusions that make it susceptible to breaking during the process. Generally, these are the diamonds that will be sold as rough to be set into a ring. You probably won’t be able to have it cut & faceted at a later time when your style changes.
With that being said, if you love the unique designs of rough diamonds for your engagement ring, then you should have one! In no way do I want to dissuade you from one, but understanding the pros and considerations are part of the process!
