How I Look at a Diamond

I know that all diamonds may look alike at first glance, but there is a world of difference!  While I can get very detailed with my gem nerd talk, I wanted to tell you my basic process of finding a diamond for a client.  The center diamond of any ring is what you will be looking at for a very long time, and I want you to love it every time you glance down at your hand!

Multiple Diamonds: I usually get multiple diamonds in at a time to look at and compare. Even though the specs on paper or video might look great, it may not actually be that great in person. I liken it to online dating. The pictures and texting might be very promising, but when you meet them in person, it is a different story!

Macro View: Before I do anything else, I open the diamond papers and put them on my hand to walk around my studio taking them to the window for max sunshine and to the shadows to see how it sparkles. As I tilt my hand back and forth, I look at the play of light and look for shadows that shouldn’t be there.  I also compare the diamond color with each other to see if one looks warmer than the other.

Micro View: At this point, I look at the specs of each diamond on the diamond paper to get an idea how they are graded. I use my microscope to examine each one looking for things like, inclusions, cut differentiations, fluorescence, and laser inscriptions, just to name a few!

Best Value: This is the time that I look at the prices of each diamond to compare against what I saw in both the macro and micro view to evaluate it for best value.  There are many times when the lower priced diamond might face up as the best diamond even though some of the quality characteristics are lower, and remember, I am looking for the best diamond for YOU!

Final Step: This is the step where I show you the diamonds! I walk you through an abbreviated version of my process above and talk about my findings.  I’ll answer any questions and give you my recommendation based on what your needs are.
