How Long Does it Take to Ring Shop?

One of the questions that comes up when I am working with a client on an engagement ring and wedding bands, is how long it will take to get the ring completed.

With the upcoming fall and holiday season being a popular time to propose, I want to give you some time frames so you know what to expect!

How Long Does It Take?

It is typical to expect 6-8 weeks (sometimes a little less time, and sometimes, a little more time) from start to completion.

A lot depends on whether what you want is already made by a company or if it needs to have some form of customization (specific stone size/shape/type, specific metal color, etc)

Don’t let the time frame throw you off! This is a very special piece and needs time to create how you want it.

Why Does It Take That Long?

·       Style: No one can see the picture you have inside your head of the ring you are imagining, so it takes some time to tease out the details.  Even when you have a picture (which really helps), there are some details that usually aren’t shown in the picture that an experienced jeweler needs to investigate with you.  Spending some time on the details before hand is really important because you end up with a ring you are proud to give.

·       Customization: It is rare to pick a ring out of a jewelry case that aligns with your style and budget! Even if the customization is simply a different metal color or a different center diamond shape, the ring is going to need to be made to your specifications, which is great because you get a ring that is uniquely yours.  But, that takes time!

·       Ready-Made Rings: Ready-made engagement rings or wedding bands can be done in a shorter time frame than 6 weeks, but you won’t be able to change the size or shape of the center diamond, get a better or lesser diamond quality, add more or less accent diamonds, or sometimes, change the metal color.  They are ready to-go, which will work for some people but not all.  

Worth The Wait

Having a longer lead time for your engagement ring allows you to get the ring you really want instead of settling. It also allows for you to plan the proposal, make reservations, and practice how you are going to ask.

Time Hack

One way to make your ring shopping process shorter is to propose with a solitaire style ring. A solitaire is simply a classic ring that has a single, center diamond or gemstone.

You and your fiancée can come in together later to choose a different setting for the ring. It is a win-win because you don’t have to stress over the design but you still get the surprise!
