Aquamarine is the birthstone for March, and if you are a Pisces, you’ll feel extra connected to it. The name Aquamarine is Latin for “sea water,” and has always been the gemstone most connected to water in general. In fact, legend says that it came from the sea chests of mermaids! Sailors wore Aquamarine as a talisman to protect them from the wild sea.
Aquamarine is the mineral beryl, like Emerald, but is greenish blue to blue green in color. It also does not have the inclusions that Emerald does. So, it is rare, actually, to see them in an Aquamarine. Aquamarine has a hexagonal crystal structure, meaning that it grows in a long, rectangular formation coming out from a host rock. They make incredible specimens and carvings!
I can’t say that I am a fan of the super-light Aquamarine that barely has any color in it, but I LOVE the vibrant color that you see in larger gemstones! Most Aquamarine is heat treated to take out the yellow color which makes it look more green, but again, I LOVE it when it has a greenish color to the blue!
