Should I Wear My Jewelry While I Sleep

One of the most common questions my clients and friends ask me is about whether or not they should sleep while wearing their jewelry. I understand the desire – convenience being high up on the list. There is a famous phrase coined by DeBeers, “a diamond is forever.” But, that does not apply to jewelry! Confused? Let me explain.

Why Jewelry Isn’t Forever

Jewelry is made of precious metals that wear over time and get bent or snagged.  Just like your car needs regular maintenance, like oil changes and tire rotations, your jewelry needs regular maintenance, like replacing prongs, replacing chipped gemstones, buffing out scratches, or tightening gemstones in their settings. With proper care and maintenance investment, your jewelry can last forever but not if you aren’t taking care of it!

What Are the Risks to Wearing While Sleeping?

When we are sleeping, our body is highly relaxed and our minds are no longer conscious.  As you move around during the night, you aren’t aware if a chain gets caught on bedding or if your earrings are being smashed in the pillow. During the day, if we hit our ring on something, we check it right away, but at night, we just continue rolling over.

And, if your jewelry already has significant wear and tear, it doesn’t take a lot to have a final break. When your sleeping, you aren’t going to know where you lost your gemstone. Here are some considerations:

·       Losing gemstones

·       Breaking chains

·       Snagging prongs or settings on bedding

·       Scratching yourself

·       Earrings get pulled, potentially damaging your ear

What Should I Do?

Set up a jewelry box or container in a place that a curious child or cat cannot play with. Every night before you go to bed, put all your jewelry away, making it part of your nightly ritual.  For me, I take off my rings when I walk into my home at the same time I take off my shoes.  My earrings, necklaces, and bracelets come off when I am putting on my pajamas.  I still like to be a little blingy while I make dinner!

I know it might feel like a pain in the beginning to take your jewelry off, but if you've ever lost an important gemstone, it can be devastating. I would rather err on the side of caution.
