Summertime is perfect to explore new things while you are traveling. If you are a lover of jewelry and gemstones, California offers fascinating adventures!

Gold Mining

Gold mining is still being done in California today by amateurs and professionals alike.

If you are just beginning your interest in gold mining and the history, Roaring Camp Mining Co. in Pine Grove, CA might be a perfect spot!

They have tent and cabin camping, guided gold tours that include both panning for gold and a history tour, gold bearing gravel piles that you can sift through, and BBQ cookouts. It is fun for both interested adults and kids!

Gemstone Mining

California offers a couple of spots to mine for gemstones.

Oceanview Gem Mine in east San Diego County is really fun! They give you all the things you need to sift through the pile of dirt and see what you find. When I went, I found a beautiful Kunzite, which I got to keep. The area is mainly known for tourmaline, but as with any gemstones, there are usually others found in the same area.

Benitoite is the state gem of California, and is found only in San Benito County, California!

Benitoite is a deep blue gemstone similar in color to fine sapphire, but it is a completely different mineral with its own set of properties. They aren’t normally seen in jewelry because there isn’t enough of a supply.

The Benitoite Mining Company offers mining similar in style to the Oceanview Gem Mine, where you grab a bucket of dirt from a gravel pile to take back to your station with water and screens to help you sift through the dirt.
