Why is Gold Different Colors

Updated: 2 days ago

Most of us grew up believing gold was….well gold. So, it can be surprising (and a little confusing) when jewelers start talking about white gold or rose gold. Is gold naturally different colors?

Short answer: no – but the magic happens after it comes out of the ground.

Gold’s Natural Color (and Why it Changes)

Gold always comes out of the ground in its natural yellow color. However, pure gold is very soft, which makes it impractical for everyday jewelry. To make it durable enough to wear, jewelers mix gold with other metals – a process called alloying.

These added metals don’t just strengthen the gold, they can also change its color, giving us the beautiful variety we see today.

White Gold: Sleek and Modern

White Gold is created by mixing yellow gold with metals like:

·       Nickel

·       Palladium

·       Zinc

Because many people are sensitive or allergic to nickel, modern white gold alloys often contain very small amounts – or none at all.

Important to know:

White gold is not naturally bright white. To achieve that clean, icy look, its plated with a metal called rhodium.

Over time, rhodium plating can wear away, revealing a slightly warmer tone underneath. The good news? White gold can easily be re-plated at most local jewelry repair shops.

Rose Gold: Romantic and On-Trend

Rose gold gets its signature blush color from a high percentage of copper, mixed with a touch of silver.

This pink-hued metal has surged in popularity over the last decade, thanks to its warm, romantic feel. Its especially stunning when paired with certain gemstones – Morganite is a standout favorite in rose gold settings.

Soft, flattering, and unique – rose gold has serious charm!

A Little History: Gold Through the Ages

Gold trends come and go, just like fashion:

·       Victorian era: Yellow and rose gold combinations

·       Edwardian and Art Deco eras: White gold and platinum

Each metal color has had its moment in the spotlight – and that is part of the fun!
