A Holiday Proposal

Holiday proposals are very exciting and one of the most popular times to get engaged.  It is also one of the most nerve-wracking events of your life!  Here are some practical tips to help make it as smooth as possible, whether you are asking in front of the whole family or in a more intimate setting.

1.     Practice! This is one of the most important suggestions I have for you, so please don’t skip this.  Besides the question of ‘will you marry me,’ you probably want to say a few words about how much you love her and how important she is to you.  When your heart is beating fast and you feel your sweat glands pucker, that is not the time to improv what you want to say.  Write down what you want to say weeks before and practice saying it over and over when you are driving, so that when the nerves want to shut down your ability to think, the words will be easy to grab ahold of in your mind and speak them.

2.     Consider your environment. If you want to propose at a restaurant, call and ask a server whether it will be loud with lots of voices talking over dinner.  You do not want to pour your heart out only to have her say, “what?!!” If you plan to do it in front of family, have a select few to gather everyone around the tree (or wherever you are asking) and get them to be quiet first.  Grandma wants to hear what you will be saying, too!  Also, this time of year is quite cold, make sure the environment isn’t one where she’ll be shivering so much that the first thing she’ll be thinking is about getting warm, and secondly saying yes.  Also, you don’t want to accidently fling the ring away in a fit of shivers!

3.     Hikes. Many of my clients want to propose at their favorite hiking spot, and there a few things to plan for.  The bulky box isn’t conducive to stealth, so ask your jeweler for a small pouch that you can easily fit in a secured pocket.  Hiking will cause hands to swell, so don’t be dismayed if the ring doesn’t fit or is too tight. Chances are her hands are swollen and will go back to her regular size after she has rested. The opposite is true as well, if her ring fits perfect on the hike, it may actually be too big for her when her hands are normal size. PLEASE make sure you have a firm grip on the ring because searching the ground for a ring that dropped takes away from the surprise!
