What to Do with Jewelry When Relationships End

We all know that not every relationship works out, and sometimes, our loved ones leave the earth too soon. In most of those instances, there is jewelry that reminds you of that relationship. I have heard my clients say everything from, “I just want to give it all away,” to “I want to keep it for my children.”  I want to encourage you to take your time. Once you get rid of it, it is gone, and I suppose in some cases, that is the end goal, but I advise you to take your time. Wait until the strong waves of grief and/or anger have subsided so that you can decide what to do in a more rational mind. Whichever way you feel about the jewelry from that relationship, here are some options to consider.

·       Save it for Children or Family: Even in cases of divorce, I have had many clients still keep their wedding ring and/or special jewelry from the marriage to pass on to the children. You can do this more easily if they are adult children, otherwise, you’ll have to store it for the younger ones until they are older.

·       Sell the Gold and Platinum: You can take your jewelry, broken and whole, to someone who buys it for the metal content. Usually, they aren’t going to want the gemstones, so have them taken out. Excluding a large gemstone, you can sell the piece with the gemstones in knowing the payment won’t reflect an extra amount for the gemstones, just the metal value.

·       High End Brand Name Jewelry: If you have jewelry from Cartier, David Yurman, or Van Cleep & Arpels, just to name a few, there are places to sell those brands specifically. You can contact a jeweler who sells those brands in their store because they might have a client/collector looking for your piece, or they would know where it can be sold.  The Real Real is an online reseller that sells Cartier and David Yurman.

·       Vintage Jewelry: If the jewelry you have is on the vintage side, there are also places to sell your pieces to that will give you more than just the metal content.  Lang Antiques in San Francisco is my go-to referral for my clients!

·       Restyle it: Whether it is a divorce or death, I have had many clients take the gemstones out to create a new piece that represents their transformation. A nod to the past and what it taught them, and a new vision for the possibilities of their new life. (The picture on this blog is a wedding ring I restyled for a client!)
